Rangeway - Field Notes #7

Hey Pathfinders,

It’s been a while since the last Field Notes!

We’ve been working through site opportunities, talking with drivers, and figuring out where Rangeway can make the most useful difference.

There’s a new piece of that work I’m excited to share!

Meet ChargeVia by Rangeway

Not every charging stop needs a new building.

Sometimes the coffee, food, restrooms, and people who take care of the place are already there.

What’s missing is fast charging.

ChargeVia brings Rangeway charging to existing retail, convenience, and hospitality properties. We develop and manage the charging while the host keeps doing what they do best.

We’re looking for more than available parking. The property needs to be convenient, well maintained, and somewhere drivers can actually make use of their stop. The host’s approach to taking care of customers matters just as much.

Our purpose-built locations remain part of the plan. ChargeVia gives us another way to bring that hospitality approach to more places.

What Drivers Told Us

We also wrapped up our driver study. Thank you to everyone who participated or helped share it.

Reliability, charging speed, clean restrooms, and price came through clearly.

Drivers described using charging time to get food, stretch their legs, and take care of children or pets.

The responses also challenged us.

A comfortable lounge isn’t automatically a reason to choose a location or pay more for charging. We have to get the essentials right and make the rest of the experience genuinely useful.

We’re taking those findings into our planning alongside the practical questions each site presents. The study helps us understand preferences; it doesn’t replace the work of figuring out whether a particular location makes sense.

From the Newsroom

We’ve been sharing more of the thinking behind Rangeway, from the design of our locations to the equipment we’re choosing.

Here’s what you may have missed.

California Modern, Distinctly Rangeway
Rangeway began with a vision of charging stops along the California coast. That idea still shapes our design direction: warm materials, comfortable spaces, and a connection to the landscape around each location.

The Hardware Behind the Rangeway Experience
The conversations and firsthand visits that led us to choose Ekoenergetyka, and why serviceability and performance across different climates mattered to that decision.

Hospitality Was in the Brief
Providing an amenity creates an obligation to maintain it. How my hospitality background shapes our approach to property care, useful amenities, and an app-free charging experience.

What EV Drivers Told Us About Better Charging Stops
A closer look at our driver study, including what respondents prioritized, what they were willing to pay for, and where the findings challenged our assumptions.

Beyond the NEVI Minimum
Getting chargers in the ground is only the beginning. We look at site selection, accessible amenities, and the responsibility to keep publicly funded infrastructure working.

When Charging Gets Fast, the Place Becomes the Product
Faster charging changes the length of a stop, but people still need a restroom, a coffee, or a few minutes outside the car. What makes a shorter visit worth choosing again?

What’s Next

We’re developing an initial ChargeVia project around a fresh approach to convenience retail, with food and beverages playing an important role. There’s more work to do before we can share the details, but I’m looking forward to showing you what that can look like.

If you own a property that could be a fit, or know someone we should talk to, reach us at hello@rangeway.co.

See you at the next stop...
